Big Rocks Weir
The proposed Big Rocks Weir is located on the Burdekin River, about 26km north-west of Charters Towers.
It would provide up to 10,000ML of additional water to support agriculture, industry and urban water security in the Burdekin region.

The project would:
- supply up to 10,000ML of additional water for the Burdekin region
- support growth in agriculture, industry and urban communities
- improve long-term water security for regional development.
Location
The proposed site is on the Burdekin River, about 26km north-west of Charters Towers in North Queensland.
Status
The Queensland and Australian governments funded pre-construction activities which supported Charters Towers Regional Council in progressing:
- environmental impact assessments and approvals
- detailed design and construction costings
- assessment of water pricing and funding needs
- engagement with potential customers.
Sunwater has completed a review of the project and information developed.
The Queensland Government will consider Sunwater’s review and other relevant information before deciding the next steps.
