Queensland Veterans and Veterans’ Families Strategy

After engaging in significant public consultation across Queensland, we’re developing the first strategy for veterans and their families in Queensland.

Why we need a strategy

Queensland is home to the largest population of veterans in Australia. With more than 163,000 current or former Australian Defence Force members living in the state, we want to create the best possible services and supports for these Queenslanders who have served our country in our time of need.

As we develop the state's first strategy for veterans and their families, we want to capture the knowledge and perspectives of veterans, their families, the community and businesses to ensure the most positive outcomes.

Significant consultation, both face to face and online, was held across the state to ensure Queenslanders had the opportunity to have their say.

This marks the first step in our journey to shape outcomes for veterans and their families.

This strategy is part of the Queensland Government’s commitment to strengthen the veteran community.

Key pillars

The following five pillars outline our aspirations for veterans, their families and the veteran community:

  • Commemoration and recognition
  • Community and sport
  • Education and employment
  • Health, housing and support
  • Veterans in business

Consultation

After visiting 11 communities across the state, engaging virtually and receiving a significant number of responses to the online survey, our consultation period has now closed. Consultation took place in Townsville, Cairns, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Ipswich, Rockhampton, Mackay, Hervey Bay, Emerald, Toowoomba, Brisbane, and online.
