You must submit your completed application form, ID and supporting documents (if needed) by post or in person.
What you should know
As a registered civil partnership notary, you will need to adhere with the Queensland Government's Civil Partnerships Act 2011.
You must advise us of changes to your contact details or personal circumstances including:
- occupation
- business interests
- criminal history.
You can conduct civil partnership ceremonies in Queensland but cannot solemnise marriages.

How to register or renew as a civil partnership notary
Choose how to submit and follow the steps.
Step 1: Gather your documents
Proof of identity
You need to gather 3 forms of proof of identification (ID) documents, including proof of home address.

Supporting documents
If you are not already a registered civil marriage celebrant or a renewing civil partnership notary, you must provide:
- a current nationwide criminal history report from the Queensland Police Service
- attach personal references from 2 adults (over 18 years) who are not members of your family.
Translating documents
If your documents are not in English, you need to get them translated.
Step 2: Certify copies of your documents
You must get copies of your ID documents and supporting documents certified by an authorised person.

Step 3: Fill in the application form

Print and complete the application form by hand. Include your payment method on the form.
Step 4: Submit your application

Step 5: Complete an online assessment
New applicants only
If you are not already a registered civil marriage celebrant or a registered civil partnership notary, we will email you an online assessment for you to complete.
Step 6: Receive confirmation
We will notify you if your application has been approved and advise that you are now registered as a civil partnership notary.

Opening hours: Monday to Friday, 8.30am–4.30pm.
Closed public holidays.
Bring with you:
- original ID and supporting documents
- completed printed application form
- payment method.
Step 4: Complete an online assessment
New applicants only
If you are not already a registered civil marriage celebrant or a registered civil partnership notary, we will email you an online assessment for you to complete.
Step 5: Receive confirmation
We will notify you if your application has been approved and advise that you are now registered as a civil partnership notary.
How long it takes
Processing times start when an application with all required documents and payment has been received.
