Camping in crocodile habitat areas
When camping in an area where there’s crocodile habitat, set up camp well away from the water’s edge.
- Camp at least 50m from the water’s edge, well above the high-water mark.
Crocodiles have attacked people in tents pitched too close to the water.
If it’s not possible to camp that far away, choose a spot on top of a high bank that will be difficult for a crocodile to access.
- Wash dishes and prepare food well away from the water’s edge.
- If you need to collect water, avoid crouching down and never use the same location twice.
The smaller you appear to the crocodile, the more likely it is to see you as prey, and crocodiles are excellent at learning repeated behaviours.

Camp at least 2 metres above the high-water mark.
Never prepare food, wash dishes, or fillet fish near the water’s edge or nearby riverbank.
Dispose of food scraps, fish offal and other waste away from your campsite.
And never leave food scraps, fish frames or bait at your campsite or boat ramp.
Always stay 5 metres back from the water’s edge and never paddle or swim in Croc Country.
Remember, crocs live in both freshwater and saltwater.
