Right to information

Part of the Privacy and right to information topic

The Right to Information Act 2009 (RTI Act) gives all sectors of the community access to government-held information.

What you should know

The RTI Act allows you to access information that is held by the Queensland Government but is not publicly available.

Public information

Many types of information are already publicly available online including:

  • publication schemes
  • disclosure logs
  • released Cabinet documents.

Not publicly available information

If the information you need is not publicly available, you can contact the relevant government agency and request the information.

You can also apply to the Office of the Information Commissioner (OIC) to access information published by government departments, ministers, local councils, public hospitals, public universities and statutory bodies.

The OIC can advise whether the information is accessible through their Administrative Access Scheme or if you need to make an RTI application.

Amend personal information

If you believe documents held by the government containing your personal information are inaccurate, misleading, out of date or incomplete you can apply to the OIC to amend personal information.
