Government's obligation to protect your rights
Public entities in Queensland must respect, protect and promote human rights.
Public entities include:
- Queensland Government departments
- local councils
- public sector employees
- ministers
- private organisations performing public functions on behalf of the government.
Under the Human Rights Act 2019 (the Act) they must:
- act and make decisions in a way that is compatible with human rights
- properly consider human rights when making decisions.
A decision or action is considered compatible with human rights if it does not limit a human right or only limits a human right in a way that is reasonable and justifiable.
