Register as a motor wrecker salesperson

You must be registered to work as a salesperson for a wrecker (motor dealer) selling vehicles and parts. It is illegal to work unregistered.

Note: Contractors must have a full wrecker (motor dealer) licence.

What motor wrecker salespeople do

Registered salespeople who work for wreckers can acquire used motor vehicles—including vehicle parts—to sell as parts.

They can't:

  • sell complete vehicles
  • conduct auctions
  • operate trust accounts
  • be in charge of a place of business.

Supporting documents

You must attach the following supporting documents to your application (where relevant).

Proof of identity

When you lodge the form, you will need to attach 100 points of certified identification (ID)—the points are explained on the application form.

Please don't post originals or email us copies of your certified ID.

If you're not an Australian citizen or permanent resident, you need to:

  • give us a certified copy of your passport
  • have a visa that allows you to work in Australia.

Proof of your qualifications

You will need to attach proof of your qualifications.

Insolvency information (if relevant)

If you are an insolvent under administration, you will need to attach a letter from your current employer, on their company letterhead, that:

  • outlines your role in the company
  • states if you will be in a position to significantly influence how they manage their business.

You must also explain in writing:

  • how you became an insolvent under administration (if it was in your business, also advise the type of business)
  • what steps you took to avoid going into insolvency
  • how much you owe to each creditor (list them all by name and amount)
  • whether you faced any charges relating to the insolvency.

Training

Before you can apply for a motor wrecker salesperson registration, you need to complete all of the modules of an Automotive Retail, Service and Repair (AUR) training package through a registered training organisation.

The only exception is if you've held an equivalent certificate within the past 2 years.

Choose all the modules from either of the tables below. Use the training.gov.au website to find a training provider.

If you're travelling on a student visa, make sure the training organisation you use is registered with the Commonwealth Register of Institutions for Overseas Students. We don't accept training certificates based on credit transfers for international students.
